From 12 to 15 November 2009, Singaporeans had the opportunity to view 400 rare Japanese dolls which were handmade by 200 doll masters from Traditional Edo-Kimekomi Dolls Sachiei-Kai, Japan. The handcrafted dolls were dressed in exquisite costumes, and depicted various Japanese festivals, folklore and traditions.
Sachiei-Kai has generously donated 104 dolls to SPM. The dolls depict Chinese zodiac animals and Japanese during the Edo period (1603 – 1867). These traditional dolls are found in most Japanese families. They are displayed as decoration pieces in homes, especially during festivals such as Hina Matsuri (Japanese Doll Festival or Girls’ Day) and Children’s Day.
The donated dolls will be on display at SPM until 31 January 2010.
