FROM THE 60s: A PHILATELIC DISPLAY
9 March - 1 September 2002
This
exhibition is organised in conjunction with the Heritage Festival
2002 - Colour me 60s to commemorate those amazing 10 years.
This
exhibition combines visuals, prose and philatelic materials of prominent
events and personalities of the 60s to capture events, trends and
thoughts of the decade around the world, particularly in Singapore.

|
|
The
visitor can expect to see all the major issues of local
stamps from the 60s on display. These stamps act as living
expressions of the challenges and aspirations of Singaporeans
in their struggle for independence and nation building.
Some of these stamps include the commemorative stamps, National
Day 'State Flag of Singapore' issued on 3 June 1960 and
Inauguration of Federation, issued on 16 September 1963.

|
|
These
milestone-marking stamps are placed against a backdrop of
pictures, clippings and world stamps depicting world events
- Beatlemania, rise of feminism, Vietnam war, political assassinations,
Chinese cultural revolution, the hippies - that shaped the
amazing and controversial 60s. |
|
This
exhibition also includes a collection of Barbie dolls, the
desired toy of the 60s. These dolls, sponsored by Mattel,
and dressed in clothes designed by Temasek Polytechnic design
students, reflect the students' personal and creative response
to varied themes of the decade.
