Stages
& Stamps Exhibition
Stages and Stamps Exhibition is organised in conjunction
with the opening of the Esplanade - Theatre on the Bay
and the launch of the stamps to commemorate the opening.
The exhibition is divided into two sections:

2001
Singapore Arts Festival

Theatre
and performing arts in Singapore
This
section of the exhibition takes you on a journey into
the rich cultural life of Singapore and performing arts
in Singapore through the prism of the stamps that have
been issued since Singapore's independence in 1965. On
display are important performance venues in Singapore,
cultural performances representing our multi-ethnic society,
and Art Festivals are featured on Singapore stamps.

These
displays are augmented by ancillary material, such as
album covers, theatre tickets and posters of some important
performances which took place at these venues. Other displays
captured in the exhibition are life-size puppets of Sang
Nila Utama from The Finger Players, and The Nutcracker
costumes from Singapore Dance Theatre and Malay dance
costumes from Sriwarisan.

Theatre and performing arts in the World

Shakespeare |
The
section takes you on a philatelic journey through the
world of theatre and performing arts since the 16th century.
This section of the exhibition showcases in five parts
famous personalities in theatre and performing arts, as
well as the various types of theatre performances in the
world. Familiar names commemorated on stamps are playwrights
William Shakespeare, Victor Hugo and Andrew Llyod Webber;
composers Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mozart; and stage
performers Margot Fonteyn, Sarah Bernhard and Mei Lan-fang.
Famous theatre venues such as Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow,
Russia, Royal Opera House of London and La Scala in Milan,
Italy are also featured. The last part of the exhibition
showcases dances and theatre performances. These displays
are supported by Indonesian and Chinese puppets from The
Finger Players.
This exhibition is curated by volunteer curator, Mr Johnny
Lowis.
