Mr Yusof bin Ishak became the first local to be appointed Yang-di-Pertuan Negara (Head of State) in 1959 when Singapore achieved self-government. In 1965, Singapore became a republic and the Presidency was established. Parliament elected Mr Yusof as the First President for a term of four years. His last official function was the opening of a horticultural show in Oct 1970, a month before he passed away while in office.
